Walking Trails of Local History

St. Lucie has always been rich in culture and local history, so it only makes sense to immerse yourself in all that the county has to offer.

Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail

Covering several miles, and eight important historical landmarks, the Zora Neale Hurston Dust Tracks Heritage Trail is a testament to Hurston’s influence on both St. Lucie and the literary world.

Each of the eight markers tell a small piece of Hurston’s expansive story, as well as the role she played in the Harlem Renaissance.

The trail starts at the Zora Neale Hurston Branch Library, weaves through parts of east Fort Pierce, and ends at the Fort Pierce Main Street Headquarters.

The Highwaymen Heritage Trail

Highwaymen artOnce a circuit used by local black residents in the ‘50s as a means to sell their unique Florida paintings to visitors, the Highwaymen Trail pays homage to the entrepreneurial spirit and artistic merit of those who were discriminated against during a time of civil unrest.

The trail, which covers ten unique locations throughout Fort Pierce, helps tell the stories of those who helped enrich the cultural makeup of the area through their art.

On February 18, 2017, Ft. Pierce will host the Florida Highwaymen Festival, where visitors can come learn more about their contributions, and gain a better sense of the artists’ importance to the fabric of the area’s history.
